We had our first tutoring session on Friday with the volunteers from ODSS and I think the kids learned a lot and had fun! There will be one more tomorrow after school and if students are interested, we will schedule some dates in January.
Due to unforseen circumstances I was away from school Friday and have decided to postpone the playing test until the new year, so students have a little more time to practice with their partners. If anyone would prefer to go before the holidays they can go tomorrow during class.
Reminder that the concert band will be performing at the school carol sing on Friday at 10:50. Parents are welcome to come and watch!

What are we working on?
We have been playing Hot Cross Buns as our warm up piece and have moved on to Merrily We Roll Along and Lightly Row, which will be the student's first playing test. We can now play 5 notes! They will perform the duet with a partner on Monday December 14th and be marked on their notes, rhythm and tone. They have had 2 weeks notice to practice before the test.
Concert Band Performing
The Concert Band (extra-curricular group) will be playing two songs for the school on Friday December 18th at 10:50 during the carol sing. Parents are welcome to come and watch! Please sign in at the office and enjoy.

ODSS Students coming to Volunteer (Extra Help Opportunities)
We are fortunate enough to have some senior band students from ODSS who have volunteered their time to come and help small groups of students (by instrument) practice. They will help the students with learning their notes, embouchure and tone. It is an excellent opportunity for your child to get some small group practice in and to get some extra help with their instrument (especially with their first playing test coming up on Monday the 14th).
We have two extra help sessions scheduled for after school on Friday December 11th and Monday December 14th. The ODSS students will arrive between 3:15 and 3:25. Our students will meet in the band room after school, unless they have younger students to walk home, in which case they can walk them home and then return to school. The session will be finished by 4:15. If there is enough interest and attendance is good, we will schedule some sessions for the new year. A form will be coming home with your child on Friday to give them permission to attend these sessions.

Welcome!
Welcome to the Instrumental Music Blog for CMES. I have created this blog as space for parents and students to be aware of what's happening with the program and to have a calendar with band class dates posted (so we know when to bring instruments to school) and Concert Band rehearsals (once extra-curricular practices start up).
Practicing at home is the key to your child's success in music. The only way to improve is to practice the skills taught in class. It is my expectation that the students sign an instrument out for practice at least once a week . Instruments are available to sign out on days 1, 2 and 3 of the day cycle (which are the days that I am at the school). Each class has a day cycle day where they get priority over the instruments, however there are usually enough instruments left over that anyone can come at the end of the day and sign one out. I have included a link on the right hand side of this blog that has the upper grand day cycle calendar for the 2015-2016 school year for your information.
Mrs. Horan's class -Day 1
Mrs. Neal/Bonter/Langman's class -Day 2
Mr. Van Maren's class -Day 3
Concert Band will be starting up November 20th and occur each week on Day 2 of the day cycle calendar at lunch. It is an optional ensemble for students who are keen and interested in playing more and having more opportunities to perform.
We have had a great start to the year and I look forward to seeing how the students progress as the year goes on. If you have any questions, comments or concerns please feel free to contact me at the school at extension 415 or email me at melanie.neal@ugdsb.on.ca.
Thank you
Melanie Neal
